The book ”Themes and Variations” borrows its title from a 1960s art history book, The original work is a study in pairing works of art and certain details that throughout 5 centuries has been copied and inspired many new paintings. The work by K.E. Maison explains with a short introduction and a huge amount of pictures, the problems with the notion of originality in art.
Most importantly reference the formal choice of a short and powerful introduction, written by another person, paired with a flood of imagery.
In many ways the book is also the result of working with drawing as research, and throughout the book topics such as: sleepers, movie scenes, artists at work, cityscapes and a michelinman series, is presented although carefully arranged out of a specific order.
